Nursing Home Woes

This month, officials in Saratoga County are expected to receive the results of a study of the financial situation of Maplewood Manor, the county-owned nursing home in Ballston Spa.

Costs to operate the nursing home are anticipated to exceeded revenues by approximately $10 million this year and county officials are following a statewide trend to evaluate cost-cutting options. In Washington County, a similar study resulted in officials pursuing the privatization of the county-owned Pleasant Valley nursing home.

The anticipation of the release of the report and any potential resulting action has caused concern about the future of the facility among some of the 315 full-time employees and residents of the 277-bed facility in Saratoga County.

The report, prepared by the Harris Beach law firm, is scheduled to be presented to the county Public Health Committee Monday afternoon, said Saratoga County Administrator Spencer Hellwig.
